There is a specific kind of alchemy that occurs when the heavy, fuzz-drenched riffs of Kyuss' Welcome to Sky Valley meets the thick, viscous pour of raw soap batter. Both are heavy, raw, and deeply textured. Just heavenly reverberation from start to finish. It is not simply a matter of making a soap, or practicing chemistry. It is about capturing an atmosphere. For my first entry into Saponification Soundscapes, I chose an album that was forged in the desert.
IN YOUR VALLEY BENEATH YOUR SKY... I AM HOME
Welcome to Sky Valley is more than just music. It is a landscape. It possesses a weight, your soul even, that mirrors the density of my soap bars. When I'm in the trance of creation, channeling my inner Brahma, I require a soundtrack that does not shy away from some headbanging, and a subtle sway. Kyuss' Welcome to Sky Valley provides exactly that. The psychedelic journey through the desert feels like shifting sands under an endless sky.
The slow, hypnotic build of each song reflects the patient wait for the lye and oil to reach the perfect trace. There is a specific point in the music where the sound expands into something vast and airy. Just like the moment you know you're ready to pour. This is my moment of transition. In this instance, the distinction between the maker and the craft dissolves completely. Serotonin unlimited.
To listen to this album is to transform. To make soap is to transmute. Whether you are seeking the peace of the desert or the heat of the studio, may your next cleanse reverberate into the heavens.
Give it a listen.
